on wednesday, 39 people were found dead in a truck container at an industrial park in essex, southeastern england. british authorities said thursday that the victims are chinese nationals. 

the bodies were discovered by ambulance staff at waterglade industrial park in grays, a town 40 km east of london, and authorities were alerted before 1:40 am. 

the local police confirmed that eight of the deceased are women and 31 are men and they said all are believed to be chinese nationals.

the british embassy in beijing published a post on its official sina weibo account at 10:47 am today, saying that the identity of the bodies is not confirmed yet. 

essex police said their recovery of the bodies is ongoing and the post-mortem and identification processes can then begin. 

experts who follow human trafficking trends suggested they could have been compelled into forced labor. or they have been migrants who paid their way for the dangerous journey.

according to essex police’s statement, the cause of death has yet to be established. 

media reports said police are working on the theory that the 39 people were attempting to enter the country illegally. 

some reports said the trailer temperature could be as low as -25 c inside, suggesting that if the refrigeration unit in the container were on, the migrants could have frozen to death.

the suspect

on wednesday, 25-year-old northern irish truck driver, mo robinson, was arrested on suspicion of murder. 

police said thursday that the suspect remained in custody and confirmed that three properties were searched in county armagh.

police believe the container came from the port of zeebrugge, belgium, to purfleet, england, where it arrived early on wednesday morning. 

the truck that transported it is believed to have originated in northern ireland.

wechat has rolled out a new payment feature that lets people transfer money using a mobile phone number. 

as one of the most popular mobile payment methods, wechat pay introduced a new payment feature on wednesday. let’s check the details first! 

 

the new feature is currently available in the latest version for ios (7.0.8) and android (7.0.7).

wechat users can transfer money to the receiver by entering a phone number. the funds will be automatically deposited into the receiver’s wechat wallet.

both the payer and the payee’s wechat accounts are required to be linked to valid mobile numbers.

the sender can transfer money to any wechat user, even those that are not a friend, as long as the mobile payment feature is enabled.

you can verify the payee’s full name to ensure that you are sending money to the right person, and select transfer time to further protect transfers security. 

 

if the payee has not enabled this feature, you can’t transfer money by this method.

alipay also has a similar feature that allows people to transfer money via mobile phone number.

according to xinhua news, china will extend 144-hr visa-free transit to more border ports as the national immigration administration (nia) said on wednesday. 

the newly added border ports to the list are chongqing municipality in southwest china, xi’an, capital of northwest shaanxi province, and ningbo in east china’s zhejiang province, the nia said in a press release. 

 

the list now includes major cities across china, such as beijing, tianjin, shanghai, hangzhou, qingdao, wuhan and guangzhou. 

 

meanwhile, the other three border ports of changsha, guilin and harbin enjoy a 72-hour visa-free transit policy. 

 

 

the visa-free transit policy will be more flexible. according to the new policy, international travelers who enter china through chengdu airport will be allowed to stay in 10 other nearby cities around chengdu for up to 144 hours visa-free.

 

they will also enjoy the policy when they enter from one of the border ports in the jiangsu-zhejiang-shanghai region and exit from another. 

 

the visa-free transit policy approved by the state council applies to people from 53 countries including austria, the czech republic, denmark, france, germany, russia, the united states, brazil, japan and qatar. 

 

 

from january 2013 to september this year, more than 452,000 foreigners traveled through china under the visa-free policy. the number reached 100,000 in 2018, up 24 percent year on year, according to the nia.
