over 70% of post 90s suffer from hair loss

if you feel like you are losing your hair, you are not alone. for those born in the 1990s, “almost going bald” has been a catchphrase on chinese social media for years.

though some say it is a self-mockery amid mounting stress at work, more young men, many still at college, are seeing receding hairlines.

a survey shows that baldness is coming earlier to young chinese. in the country, more than 250 million people suffer from hair loss and more men than women complain about excessive balding.

the post-1980s and post-1990s generations account for over 70 percent of the population, according to the china association of health promotion and education.

in a survey of 643 universities by china youth daily, more than half of the college students said they suffered from hair loss and over 60 percent had taken measures to slow it.

30-year-old yu, a university lecturer, said he started to get serious about preventing hair loss when he was a sophomore.

like many young chinese who fret over thinning hair, yu said the problem had proved to be a major headache in finding a life partner and it could sometimes count against them in job interviews.

daily loss of hair is a normal occurrence. in fact, the average person loses between 50 to 100 hairs a day,” said jia lijun with the shenzhen traditional chinese medicine hospital. “however, there are certain factors that can cause young people to shed more than usual, such as stress, lack of exercise and insomnia.”

increasingly stressful lives are leading to hair thinning and hair loss. yu said he always stayed up late due to a heavy study load at college and his busy work life resulted in a poor diet.

excessive stress, anxiety and poor health habits usually lead to hormone imbalances and premature baldness, jia said.

as the problem nags more younger chinese, many admit that hair loss has affected their confidence, said tan wenyong with the shenzhen hospital of southern medical university.

once a niche market, hair-growth products have grown into a multi-billion yuan industry.

data released by china’s national health commission indicates that the country’s hair health industry will expand by 260 percent annually in the following decade and urban people’s spending on hair care products and hair-loss treatment will surge by 30 percent in the years to come.

in early february, yu spent nearly 100,000 yuan (about $14,925) on a hair transplant with a per graft-fee of 16 yuan. “the surgery almost wiped out all my savings, but i felt it worthwhile because i regained the thickness of my hair as well as my confidence,” yu said.

this year’s charity steak lunch with the legendary investor warren buffett will probably be all about blockchain and crypto.

justin sun, the 28-year-old founder of blockchain platform tron and ceo of peer-to-peer file sharing protocol bittorrent, won the annual ebay charity auction to have lunch with warren buffett at steakhouse smith & wollensky in new york city.

sun, who calls himself a disciple of alibaba’s founder jack ma, paid $4.6 million for the opportunity to dine with buffett. sun can also bring up to seven friends.

“i’m a long-term believer (and certainly a big fan) of buffett and his long-term value investing strategy. as some of you might know, the ceo of berkshire hathaway has said publicly he sees no ‘unique value’ in bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency. yet, he has pointed to the potential in blockchain, the underlying technology behind all cryptocurrency,” sun wrote in a post on monday. “i look at the upcoming lunch with buffett as an opportunity to seek mutual understanding and growth.”

sun made the first pot of gold by investing in tesla and bitcoin when he was studying at the university of pennsylvania in 2013. a marketing guru, he has been teasing followers on twitter since last week, saying he will announce “something huge and amazing”, which pumped the price of tron as much as 20% on sunday. following the press release, sun plans to invite several “industry leaders” in the cryptocurrency and blockchain community to join the lunch with buffett.

buffett and his longtime business partner charlie munger have been known for their distaste for cryptocurrency. to buffett, bitcoin is not an investment, but “a gambling device“. munger once joked “bitcoin investors celebrate the life and work of judas iscariot” at happy hour.

however, buffett holds a more open attitude toward blockchain, the underlying technology in cryptocurrencies which is increasingly being adopted by major companies in finance, logistics, and tech, including jpmorgan chase and amazon, berkshire hathaway’s partners in a health care venture.

we probably are doing it indirectly through a bank,” buffett said of blockchain in may. “but no, i wouldn’t be the person to be a big leader in blockchain.

this is the fourth time a chinese bidder won the race and publicized their identity. with buffett’s popularity in china, where he is known as “god of stocks” and is printed on coke cans, winning the auction could also bring marketing value.

back in 2006, chinese businessman duan yongping won the bid and took his mentee huang zheng to lunch. now duan’s smartphone empire sells better than apple’s iphone in china. meanwhile, huang’s shopping app pinduoduo went public on the nasdaq in july 2018.

but not all of buffett’s lunch guests have found unfettered success. zhu ye, chairman of beijing-based online gaming firm zeus entertainment, paid $2.35 million for the lunch opportunity in 2015 and said it was “absolutely worth it”.

however, zhu has been investigated by the china securities regulatory commission for alleged violations of securities laws since last may.
